Formed in 1962, it falls under the purview of the Government of India. It is a board of education for private schools also. More than 19000 schools in India are affiliated to CBSE. At the time of the constitution of the Board, it had about 309 schools under its jurisdiction. There are 19000 plus schools under its jurisdiction at present in India and 200 plus school in foreign countries. It includes 1000 plus Kendriya Vidyalayas, 2500 plus Government/Aided Schools, 14000 plus Independent Schools, 590 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and 14 Central Tibetan Schools under the Board. The objectives of the Board is to ensure a child-centric and holistic education to all children, to develop norms for imparting the curriculum, update the professional competency of teachers. It prescribes conditions for the conduct of public examinations at the end of Class X and XII. The objective is also to affiliate institutions for the purpose of examination and ensures that the academic standards of the country are high and qualitative.
